As an example, you use a WebDAV client from your laptop when you are out traveling and need to get to your company/home server. A WebDAV client is like an ftp client on steroids.
Linux clients and Mac OS X clients have excellent support for WebDAV integrated into the operating system without requiring a supplementary WebDAV client.
